Math also called Mathematics is a subject that we use every day of our lives. Unfortunately, during school days, some people tend to scare away from it or feel reluctant about it. From my personal experience, it is one of the best subjects to learn. And it is easy to score 100% in the subject. The reason for this is that the answer you get in the US is the answer you will get in London, Australia, China, Abuja, India, Germany and in the Philippines.
In this article, I will tell you what you need to do to be a genius in math. For me, I was not that good in Math during my primary school days. It was during my secondary school days that I picked up in Math and it entered my blood. It got to a point that it became my best subject. During this time, if I was sick and you brought a mathematical problem to me, my sickness will disappear out of the excitement of solving a mathematical problem. I have had to couch a couple of people who had to clue about math and I made them begin to know and love Math. Throughout my academic life, I have taken over 35 subjects in mathematics of varying degrees and levels. It might interest you to know that I made ‘A’ in more than 28 of them.
Here are the things you need to do if you want to be a genius in Mathematics:
- Make up your mind to know math
This is very important. Where there is will, there is a way! From what I said earlier, everybody has the potential to know math. You cannot say it is meant for some people. I say this from my own experience. I made up my mind to know math and I got the knowledge.
- Devote time to math
At the initial stage of trying to learn math, you need, I repeat, you need, to devote ample time to it. This is where some people have problem with the subject. At this stage, you need to stay away from distractions – any manner of distraction. Math requires brain work and so if you present yourself to distracting environments or situations, math will not have a way to come into your brain. It gives joy for one to see oneself being mathematical and being able to solve mathematical problems.
- Give yourself a quiet time always
Some things you learn in math require quiet time to be completed stored into your brain. That is the only way math will enter your blood stream. It is during the quiet time that you will be able to think over formulas your learnt and move them from temporary registers to permanent registers in your brain. I can tell you, math has entered my blood stream. Take note that nothing good comes easy. With good measure of work, you will definitely get there.
- Follow and understand the logic
As you read example problems, make sure you follow and understand the logic. If anyone is solving mathematical problem in your presence, be sure to listen to all the statements the person is making. Those statements are very important for you to be a genius. The words will enable you understand the reasoning behind the steps to solving the problem. Make it a habit to get the reasoning behind the solution to any mathematical problem. For example, consider this simple mathematical problem: two people A and B want to share $1200. How do they share the money so that A gets three times the amount B gets? To solve this problem, assuming B gets $x, then A will get $3x. This is what the statement of the problem says. But if you add the two amounts, you are supposed to get $1200. Right? From what we know so far, we can easily form an equation:
$x + $3x = $1200 => $4x = $1200
Since the only unknown is ‘x’, solving the equation, x = 1200/4 = 300 (amount received by B)
Therefore the amount to be received by A will be 3 x $300 = $900. Notice that if you add the two amounts, you will get the $1200. So you can always verify your answer to be sure you are on the right track. That’s how lovely math is – you can verify by yourself!
- Be steadfast
Do not give gap. Read and solve mathematical problems as often as possible. For the first two to three years, be steadfast in doing this. It will get to a point that the math will have entered your blood and then after even if you do not read or solve math for a long time, it will never leave you.
- Never be discouraged
Sometimes you could stumble into problems you cannot solve. You try and try, no way. Just leave the problem and return to it later. This is a way of exercising your determination and effort. You may be surprised to see that you now have the solution. That is math for you. But never lose hope or be discouraged. Sometimes you may need to approach someone who knows better than you. This will be your last option. When you approach someone to help you, as I said earlier, be sure to listen to all the statements the person makes. Those are the keys to solving mathematical problems.
